Welcome to Grade 3 at Manor Lakes College!
We have several new students in Grade 3 and 3 new teachers so it has been a busy start to the year. The six Grade 3 classrooms are all situated in the Hindmarsh relocatable buildings next to the Bonney building.
We have: Annie Stewart 3A
Jess Gallagher 3D
Sally Burke 3B
Kate Francis 3E
Vicky Vella 3F with Antoinette Esposito (Education Support)
Kathleen Hay 3C
As you would expect, the Grade 3 students have settled in quickly and happily with their new classmates and teachers. At present students are being assessed in Literacy and Numeracy. Our Inquiry Unit is Community this term.
Please listen to your child read his/her take-home reader each night. In Grade 3 some students are reading other chapter books. We encourage all children to read for 20 minutes each night to a parent or guardian. Please record this reading in the school diary.
The new school diaries will assist communication between home and school. Please write to your child’s teacher in this diary as well as using it as a home reading record. We ask that these diaries, along with take home readers, school notes and monies are kept in the children’s black communication bags. If your child has lost his/her bag please send an alternative in its place and purchase a new one from the office. (These will be back in stock in the next couple of weeks and cost $7).
Homework is a school program which encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning. We develop tasks designed to encourage a balanced lifestyle, develop good study habits, to work independently and to make links to the wider community. The grid is designed to encourage students to choose one item at a time, work through it at their own pace and to explore areas of learning that aren’t just academic. The homework is designed to be given over a two week period, which allows the students time for other interests outside school. It is an expectation of the Department of Education that all Year 3 students do 20 minutes per evening from their homework grid. The homework should be signed by student and parent/guardian, before being returned to school on the due date, where the teacher will then check it and sign. If you have any questions regarding homework, please feel free to approach your child’s teacher.
Your child’s Mathletics user and password information has been sent home and they will be able to access this in the classroom next week. We encourage you to allow your child time to access this fantastic program at home. Not only is it highly educational but it’s also fun and can help your child understand concepts being taught at school.
Reader’s Eggs is another highly motivational program the Grade 3 children will be accessing at school. Please discuss with your child what they are learning on the computer and in all classes as children love this encouragement and interest in their academic and personal growth.
Children have been writing in their new Writer’s Notebook. This is exciting for children as it is used for jotting down ideas and they have decorated these with pictures, photos and drawings. Thank you to those parents who were able to send along these items.
During our first month at school most students are waiting for their classroom to open when the bell rings at 8.40am. Please ensure that your child is at school at this time so he/she has time to unpack his/her bag, change readers, set up their table and hand in notices and lunch orders. Unfortunately children who are arriving after 8.50 are missing out on valuable learning time. Arrivals after 8.50am are marked on the roll as late arrivals.
Children are dismissed from the classroom at 3pm. If you need to pick up your child before 3pm, please assist the class teacher by writing this in the student diary. Children leaving school early need to be signed out at the Argyle office.
When your child is absent from school please send a pink absence form with the reason for absence included. This is a legal requirement. You can also ring the school office on 9741 4202 after 8.15am to inform staff of your child’s absence.
Below is a timetable of the specialist classes. Please note that children need to wear their physical education clothes as well as their broad rimmed hat on the Physical Education Day. Please ensure that children are wearing comfortable runners as well. Children require an art smock for art (an old shirt or large t-shirt) will be fine.

Reminders
Communication bags may be used for borrowing a library book but you are welcome to send a separate library bag.
Every child has been asked to bring a box of tissues. With children already suffering from the sniffles, more tissue boxes are needed!!
Please send your child’s black broad-rimmed hat to school. Children are required to be ‘Sun Smart’ and wear these every recess, lunch time, Physical Education lesson, walks or games time during Terms One and Four.
Fruit Time/Brain food is eaten around 10am. Please send your child with a piece of fruit to eat in its natural form (no fruit cups, roll-ups etc). Children are not eating their snack for recess until 10.45 and can be quite hungry by then.
Please make yourself known to your child’s teacher in person, via the student diary or ring the school office to make an appointment with the classroom teacher.
